Medicine Dog is a portrait of a Plains Indian warrior. He looks out beneath a headdress of a coyote skin. The coyote was killed during the winter months when the fur was at its best. The coyote and wolf were revered as superb hunters, and difficult to catch. Their skin became an ideal covering for scouts serving as lookouts for raid and war parties.
