Standing I Fly
by Kirby Sattler
The Ghost Dance was a religious and cultural movement that spread among the Plains Indians in the 1890’s. It centered on the belief that if certain rituals wee performed the white man would disappear and the Indians’ traditional world returns.
To obtain the supernatural aid to bringing about these changes, the Ghost Dancers wore clothing with painted designs of birds and celestial objects that appeared to them in trances while participating in the dance.
