Description
Stone Calf
by Kirby Sattler
An honored Cheyenne war leader, Stone Calf, wears a buffalo horned bonnet trimmed with ermine skins and a war shirt of tanned buckskin, organic paints, glass beads, red shroud cloth and scalp locks. War shirts were imbued with sacred significance; only the most courageous men were allowed to wear them. As representations of past and future victories, such shirts metaphorically symbolized the survival of the tribe.
