“When I set out in 1990 to tell the story of this old pavilion, I had difficulty deciding whether to paint it as summer or winter, having strong feelings for both. The popularity The Concert enjoyed affirmed my choice but did little to diminish the feeling that this place had more to say. So … I hope you will take a walk to the park with me one more time. It’s a beautiful evening — maybe we can sit a while and listen to The Carolers sing.”
— Charles Peterson
In the Charles Peterson “Memories Collection” many of the people are based on various personalities and in some cases, likenesses of his family members. Some of the locations and settings are memories from his hometown and family homes. “The Carolers” and “The Concert” show the same park in New Berlin Wisconsin in both summer and winter with his parents occupying the bench in the summer scene and Charles and Sue occupying the same bench in the winter scene.
