The quest for medicine, spiritual power reflecting the essential force of the universe, was central to the Plains Indian. The practiced method for acquiring “Medicine” took the form of a vision quest. Intermediaries from the unseen powers would appear and bestow a gift of power to the supplicant, his supernatural protection from harm. The shield functioned as a physical representation of this protection and power infused with mystical forces, manifesting profound spiritual faith – A “Circle of Power”
