Ha-Nis-Krah (Sees Through Fog)
By Kirby Sattler
Mid-nineteenth century brought westward expansion by the whites. The native cultures of North America were changed forever; with their land taken, the buffalo destroyed, their spirit was broken. In one last desperate attempt to remove the white intruders, the “Ghost Dance” was created. The Arapaho believed that if this dance was performed properly, the white men would be swallowed by the earth, leaving the Indian to be reunited with their ancestors and once again live a free life.
