Description
Return of Red Earth
by Kirby Sattler
Beginning in the 1880s the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains were being forced onto reserves as a means of control by the U.S. government. The forces of assimilation and acculturation were quickly eroding their former way of life. The painting Return of Red Earth is a study of a middle-aged warrior, confined to reservation life, his existence diminished, pleading to his spirit world for the return of Red Earth.
